If you’re wondering what makes excellent childrens audio books, it’s the narrator. The right voice can even make some of the blandest tales intriguing and fun. It may sound a kind of odd, but I think about this when I read to my child. I want her to enjoy ever twist and turn in the story. I want her to react accordingly to the frightening parts and laugh hysterically at the amusing ones. So far I have done pretty well. When I was a kid, I thought toy dinosaurs were the best. I was never interested in dinosaur toys until we went to the natural history Museum. We lived in a small town outside of Chicago, so going to the Chicago Museum of Natural History was a big excursion for us. We actually spent a weekend in town, going to several museums. I was young at the time, but I still remember the dinosaur exhibit vividly. It was one of the most impressive things I had ever seen. There is something about dinosaurs that really makes an impression on the kid. Seeing those giant skeletons towering above you is like nothing else in the world.

Now that I’m shopping for presents for my own kids, I’m surprised to see that the Sesame Street toys have stayed remarkably the same over the years. They have hardly changed at all since I was very young. Nowadays, there are more Sesame Street Elmo toys, and some of the other playthings are more high-tech than they used to be. Nonetheless, the basic ideas are almost the same. As a matter of fact, I wish I still had my old toys from on I was a kid. I bet they would love playing with those.

My dad had really been working a lot on the train sets that weekend, and I had been helping him. He had built a whole additional loop of track, and it was looking pretty good. He was gone, and I wanted to show off his model trains to my friend. Although it would not have been against the rules just to go down and look at them, one thing led to another and soon we were playing. Somehow, we decided that it would be neat to add more train tracks. Unfortunately, we were clumsy little kids. We broke some of his miniatures. I was worried that my dad would kill me! When he got home, I told him the truth. Although he was angry at me and sent me to my room for a while, later he came up. He told me that he was proud of me for being so honest, even though I had disobeyed him.

I use her obsession with the little tykes kitchen to teach her some important lessons. One of them is cleaning up. The little tykes kitchen allows her to make clean up into a game. She gets to put away all of the pots and pans after washing them off in the toy sink. She gets to pretend to be her mom in the little tykes kitchen, talking to her dolls as if they are children. Since she got the little tyke kitchen, she is much more willing to clean up. Part of it has to do with us. We have understood that she enjoys cleaning up as long as it is made into a game. We let her play cleanup, so that she will do her chores. It has worked very well.

People who don’t play the Sims 2 online don’t understand my addiction. I have been playing the Sims deluxe for years, and still my friends laugh when they hear about it. After all, what is the fun of playing the Sims online? All you do is direct little people to walk around, buy things, and talk to people in an imaginary world. Couldn’t you get the same thrill just from living? It’s really hard for me to explain. I understand these objections. Either you get it or you don’t. We are obsessed with films! Just look at us. We thrive off of what we see in cinema. It’s almost like a drug. Now I fully understand that movies offer an often-necessary escapism, but many of us get a bit too wrapped up in the plot and characters. Want to know how I know this? Just look at the Trekis running around with their bizarre collections of Star Trek memorabilia. It’s sort of depressing. On the other end of the spectrum, you have children. This is totally okay. They are just learning and developing. It’s awesome that their imaginations run wild with fantasies and superheroes. Lord of the Rings toys aid in this process. This is all the rage right now. We are both practical people, so we decided that we would not fight about it. Instead, we started to play word scramble games. We have always been big fans of word scramble puzzles. We like crossword puzzles, Scrabble, and word searches. The problem is that playing word scramble games in the car is a little bit more difficult. You don’t have a board to work with. You don’t really have paper to work with. You need to come up with some way that both people can play the word scramble game without the driver losing its focus. I have developed a new set of pieces for a Monopoly game that I have. The kids got tired of using the same old pieces so I set about the task of updating the game. I always loved being the horse so I made one of those first. I based my figure on the Crazy Horse memorial in South Dakota. Then instead of a top hat, I made a bowler and I made mine black. For the car I chose to make a 1967 Mustang, my first car. I put a little more time into the details of that piece because it had sentimental value. I made it red with a black vinyl roof, dual exhaust, and big rear tires. Then I went a little off the wall and made a piece that looked like my dog and one that looked like my cat. I also decided we needed a man and a woman, I choose to cloth the woman in a bikini and the man in a business suit. I decided that should just about cover all the players I would ever have playing my game at one time and I have gotten quite a few nice comments on my figures.

One of my favorite Wisconsin family vacations was when we went all over the state on motorcycles on a treasure hunt. There were different prizes hidden in different places in the state and all were given to find them was their GPS coordinates which we plugged into our machines. The first prize was just a little over an hour away so we took off on our bikes and got to the area. When we got there we found it was just a clump of trees in the middle of no where, so we started searching the trees. My son, being way more agile than I climbed a few of the trees to check the crotches in the branches. While up there he looked down and saw an old rusty lunchbox sitting on the ground. We ran over and opened it up to find our prize and the coordinates for our next target. This target was a good five hour drive and the coordinates ended up to be a nice motel. We found the prize and spent the night. The rest of the run was pretty much the same. The targets we found at noon were all at restaurants and the ones we found in the evening were all at motels.

As a way to increase east Iowa tourism a group of attraction owners along the Mississippi river are sponsoring a weekend festival of water games. Areas of the river are going to be roped off to keep boats and other river traffic out of the area. The jet ski race will be held down river from the playpen as the roped off area is referred to. In the playpen there will be events for old and young alike. Diving for prizes is expected to be a big crowd pleaser. Different prizes will be printed on baseball sized rocks and these rocks will be thrown into the river while everyone watches. When the official blows the whistle everyone will enter the water at once and search the bottom in hopes of finding one of the rocks. After a set time the whistle will blow again and the divers will have to return to the bank at which time their rocks will be verified. If there are prizes not claimed there will be a half hour search but the individuals finding a rock will have to bring it back to the bank and have it verified before returning to the search. Any unclaimed prizes will be donated to charity.

The Iowa games has done wonders for central Iowa tourism as it brings people from all over the state to Ames for the weeks worth of events. If you’ve never heard of the Iowa games you have missed one of the biggest amateur events in the nation. It is our state’s version of the Olympics and has events for individuals and teams both. Most of the heavy lifting of running the event is done by volunteers and there are usually plenty of people willing to help out. Of course you have the normal events such as baseball and soccer but there are other events not so well known. The schedule of events changes every year as new sports are added and others are dropped. I have yet to hear of an event being dropped for nonparticipation, that is how well received this event is in this state. Of course not only do the teams come from far and wide the spectators do also and why not? There is a sport to satisfy everyone and anyone during this time. The grounds are also set up for venders of food and drink, mostly drink as the hot Iowa summers necessitate frequent hydration.

I dedicated one of my many South Dakota family vacations to games to play in the car. South Dakota is a large state with quite a distance between attractions thus there was a considerable amount of time spent behind the windshield. This can be one of the worst times of the whole trip especially with young children that get bored easily. The first game I happened upon was automobile bingo. Everyone gets a bingo card that has pictures in the squares rather than numbers. Once you spot one of the pictured items you call it out and everyone that has that picture can cover it’s square. The pictures are of common thing seen on the highway, things like speed limit sign or a bus or a semi truck. That was entertaining for about three games at a time or for about an hour. Next we went with the old standby “I spy with my eye”.  It turned out that we had to pick an object that was quite a way off as if you chose something directly in front of the car the object was out of sight before anyone could guess what it was. Those games really did help keep the arguments down to a minimum though.

There is a guide put out by the south central Iowa tourism board that actually lists the places where there are game clubs and there are many of them around. Apparently there are clubs where everyone brings their own computers and they hook them all together in one network to play online games. Usually the separate into different groups and the groups play against each other. One that I saw had four five man teams and they were running around (in the game) and destroying each other. The rules don’t allow for any kind of an invincible mode, so anyone can kill anyone. Usually after you are killed you have a certain amount of time and then you are resurrected. Of course you are in the same place where you died and your group has moved on so the number one priority is to find your group and develop any intelligence along the way to help. There is radio communication so you can call your buddies to help you find your way or to deliver the information that you have developed. If the airwaves are dead you are in trouble as that means everyone in your squad is dead, at that point there is no resurrection, you lost.

My very favorite toy soldier models were called “Knights of the Sword”. They were medieval toy soldiers, and they were absolutely spectacular. Although they were made of plastic, they were some of the most dramatic and well-designed soldier toys I have ever seen to this day. They were all in these great poses.  They would have their sword arms ready to swing, the shields raised fiercely in front of them, and their standards blowing in the breeze.

A number of people have played an important role in the development of modern day homeschooling during the second half of the twentieth century and one of these was Raymond Moore.

A devout Christian and ex-missionary, Raymond Moore was disturbed by the public school system and, particularly, by the fact that public schools were a breeding ground for violence and paid little attention to the moral and spiritual development of children.
