By the time I was 13, however, I was ready for a more serious .. I had been practicing every day for well over a year, and even before that I was playing fairly regularly. I was looking at drum kits with my parents, but they were a little bit hesitant to actually buy one for me. The drum kit that I had was so loud, after all, and a real drum set would be even louder. Then we lit on the solution. If I bought some drum practice pads to go along with the drum kit, I could play a quietly whenever I had to you. A practice pad is basically a glorified sheet of rubber. You can hit it with drumsticks and It has a very similar feel to an actual drum. Unlike a drum, however, it doesn’t make a lot of noise.

One thing that children struggle with when they are first using a computer is finding all the letter keys. If you’re wondering what makes excellent childrens audio books, it’s the narrator. The right voice can even make some of the blandest tales intriguing and fun. It may sound a kind of odd, but I think about this when I read to my child. I want her to enjoy ever twist and turn in the story. I want her to react accordingly to the frightening parts and laugh hysterically at the amusing ones. So far I have done pretty well. Now that I’m shopping for presents for my own kids, I’m surprised to see that the Sesame Street toys have stayed remarkably the same over the years. They have hardly changed at all since I was very young. Nowadays, there are more Sesame Street Elmo toys, and some of the other playthings are more high-tech than they used to be. Nonetheless, the basic ideas are almost the same. As a matter of fact, I wish I still had my old toys from on I was a kid. I bet they would love playing with those.

I use her obsession with the little tykes kitchen to teach her some important lessons. One of them is cleaning up. The little tykes kitchen allows her to make clean up into a game. She gets to put away all of the pots and pans after washing them off in the toy sink. She gets to pretend to be her mom in the little tykes kitchen, talking to her dolls as if they are children. Since she got the little tyke kitchen, she is much more willing to clean up. Part of it has to do with us. We have understood that she enjoys cleaning up as long as it is made into a game. We let her play cleanup, so that she will do her chores. It has worked very well.

We are both practical people, so we decided that we would not fight about it. Instead, we started to play word scramble games. We have always been big fans of word scramble puzzles. We like crossword puzzles, Scrabble, and word searches. The problem is that playing word scramble games in the car is a little bit more difficult. You don’t have a board to work with. As a way to increase east Iowa tourism a group of attraction owners along the Mississippi river are sponsoring a weekend festival of water games. Areas of the river are going to be roped off to keep boats and other river traffic out of the area. The jet ski race will be held down river from the playpen as the roped off area is referred to. In the playpen there will be events for old and young alike. Diving for prizes is expected to be a big crowd pleaser. Different prizes will be printed on baseball sized rocks and these rocks will be thrown into the river while everyone watches. When the official blows the whistle everyone will enter the water at once and search the bottom in hopes of finding one of the rocks. After a set time the whistle will blow again and the divers will have to return to the bank at which time their rocks will be verified. If there are prizes not claimed there will be a half hour search but the individuals finding a rock will have to bring it back to the bank and have it verified before returning to the search. Any unclaimed prizes will be donated to charity.

The game of chess is divided into three parts—the opening, the middle game and the endgame. The divisions are purely arbitrary, merely for the purpose of facilitating study. No dividing line separates the parts; the transition from the opening to the middle game and from the middle game to the endgame is indicated by the action and the number of men remaining on the board.
The opening covers approximately the first twelve moves of the game, with all or most of the pieces on the board. The middle game is characterized generally by the presence of Queens; the endgame is greatly simplified, with few of the forces remaining.
The opening is a development of forces. It begins with the first move and ends with the mobilization of nearly all of the men. The Rooks, as a rule, are the last to enter the skirmish, and often do not participate in the play until well into the middle game.
Ultimate Goal vs. Opening Goal
In order to understand the mechanics of the opening, it is necessary to know the opening goal. While checkmate is the principal goal of the game, it is subordinated in the opening, since the pieces are just beginning to get out. Of course, if the opponent plays very badly, or exposes his King critically or neglects his development glaringly, then checkmating ideas come to the forefront. With reasonably correct play by both contestants, lesser objectives are the goal. These all tie in with the prime purpose—checkmate of the opponent’s King. Checkmate is the ultimate goal.
