It used to be quite easy to find free poker sites from the US. They were basically everywhere! Then the Texas Holdem poker boom hit the US and also the rest of the world. As a way to increase east Iowa tourism a group of attraction owners along the Mississippi river are sponsoring a weekend festival of water games. Areas of the river are going to be roped off to keep boats and other river traffic out of the area. The jet ski race will be held down river from the playpen as the roped off area is referred to. In the playpen there will be events for old and young alike. Diving for prizes is expected to be a big crowd pleaser. Different prizes will be printed on baseball sized rocks and these rocks will be thrown into the river while everyone watches. When the official blows the whistle everyone will enter the water at once and search the bottom in hopes of finding one of the rocks. After a set time the whistle will blow again and the divers will have to return to the bank at which time their rocks will be verified. If there are prizes not claimed there will be a half hour search but the individuals finding a rock will have to bring it back to the bank and have it verified before returning to the search. Any unclaimed prizes will be donated to charity.

The Iowa games has done wonders for central Iowa tourism as it brings people from all over the state to Ames for the weeks worth of events. If you’ve never heard of the Iowa games you have missed one of the biggest amateur events in the nation. It is our state’s version of the Olympics and has events for individuals and teams both. Most of the heavy lifting of running the event is done by volunteers and there are usually plenty of people willing to help out. Of course you have the normal events such as baseball and soccer but there are other events not so well known. The schedule of events changes every year as new sports are added and others are dropped. I have yet to hear of an event being dropped for nonparticipation, that is how well received this event is in this state. Of course not only do the teams come from far and wide the spectators do also and why not? There is a sport to satisfy everyone and anyone during this time. The grounds are also set up for venders of food and drink, mostly drink as the hot Iowa summers necessitate frequent hydration.

Like the WoW Hunter class, the WoW Warlock class has the benefit of a Pet/Minion which he can use to tank mobs. Instead of supplementing with bullets or arrows, the Warlock uses his spells. Their ability to take on mobs solo, makes Warlocks fantastic tanks. While playing a WoW Warlock, you will find that by utilizing your pet’s/minion’s the right way, you can gain more XP (experience) alone than being in a group. Both the Warlock and the Hunter do well working on their own. DoT (Damage over Time) is the Warlock’s primary damage output. In PvP mode, the World of Warcraft Warlock needs to be able to survive the initial onslaught, because in a drawn out battle, the warlock is perhaps the most powerful PvP’er in the World of Warcraft. The longer the PvP duel lasts, the stronger the warlock becomes.

There is a group of gamers that want to stage the largest networked game of Stomp the Monsters ever held to get into the Guinness book of world records. They already have the event published in a list of Missouri tourism events that has copies in all the rest stops and welcome centers across the state. They are hoping to attract at least a thousand gamers from across the nations and all that they are asking you to bring is your computer with a network card of some type installed. The plan is to play two versions of the game when the maximum number of people are online. The first version will be team sports with fifty teams of twenty players each. The second version is going to be an every man for himself game. The winners of the team event are all going to receive a copy of the game with full access to all updates and future releases and the winner of the single event will receive that plus a fully loaded up to date system to play it on. The sponsors are hoping to preregister as many people as soon as possible so that they can plan the layout of the network.

One of my favorite Minnesota attractions is their festival of games. It is held in a different part of the state every year so that it can highlight different attractions. The biggest draw of the festival is when all the gamers hook their computers into the same network and play different shoot ‘em up games. These games can become long and involved and can sometimes take up hours and hours at a time. One of the main reasons that is moves all the time is to allow spouses  and children a different attraction that they can go see when they aren’t watching their parent play. The group realizes that although they can keep entertained for an all day stretch but that the family members not playing can get bored easily. The event is open to anyone with a computer, but be prepared this group is as well practiced as any I’ve seen. In some of the games where groups of players take on other groups of players the player groups have been formed for years. As a newbie it is not easy to defeat a group that has been together for years and can almost read each others minds. I suggest bringing your own group to the competition.

I dedicated one of my many South Dakota family vacations to games to play in the car. South Dakota is a large state with quite a distance between attractions thus there was a considerable amount of time spent behind the windshield. This can be one of the worst times of the whole trip especially with young children that get bored easily. The first game I happened upon was automobile bingo. Everyone gets a bingo card that has pictures in the squares rather than numbers. Once you spot one of the pictured items you call it out and everyone that has that picture can cover it’s square. The pictures are of common thing seen on the highway, things like speed limit sign or a bus or a semi truck. That was entertaining for about three games at a time or for about an hour. Next we went with the old standby “I spy with my eye”.  It turned out that we had to pick an object that was quite a way off as if you chose something directly in front of the car the object was out of sight before anyone could guess what it was. Those games really did help keep the arguments down to a minimum though.

One little known Illinois tourist attractions is the hall of games in Chicago. It is dedicated to every type of game ever imagined and there a quite a few you can play. There are video games and computer games alongside the board games such as Chutes and Ladders and Monopoly. There is a game room where you can go and compete against other gamers. Most games are just for fun, there are no prizes, just the thrill of out playing your opponent. There is also the museum side where you can see the original version of Monopoly before it was called Monopoly. Board games date back earlier than the 1920s but it was in that time frame that they became popular. Mass manufacturing could churn out multiple games an hour rather than having every board be hand drawn and painted. That was also when people started to have more leisure time as labor unions had reduced the number of hours an employee was required to work. The working man now had Sundays off to worship and spend time with the family. The hours per day were also reduced so there was time in the evening to play and enjoy time with the family.

The Iowa travel guide lists several gaming spots within the state and there are more coming all the time. There are currently several requests for new casinos to be built in different locations within the state, but the question seems to be just how many of these we can handle. I can be at no less than three casinos in under an hour from my location and there is another under consideration. This all started with the Indians and then the government found out how much money they could make allowing private enterprises build them. No one ever looked at the harmful parts of the enterprise. No one even thought of anything like a gambling addiction or the people who gamble away the rent check and grocery money. No one talked about the fact that a casino actually subtracts from the economy rather than adds to it. Of course this was all swept under the rug because politicians could charge very high rates and thus they could have more money to spend on any pet project they have in mind. Greed seems to be the biggest factor in deciding weather or not to all another establishment or not. At least that is my view

There are gaming conventions all over the place anymore. In fact those conventions are mentioned as a reason for the increase in Kansas City Missouri tourism. There must be a lot of gamers in the Midwest as Kansas City seems to be a central location to attract participants from all over. One convention that was all about board games drew almost ten thousand people. Another one dedicated to card games drew even more than that. People love their games, just look at the number of Bridge clubs or card clubs, there are even Monopoly clubs in some areas. And that doesn’t even begin to talk about the computer games or the game counsels. That is a multi-billion dollar industry in this day and age. What first started out as playing a slow paced ping pong game has turned into flying super fighters all over the world and engaging in battles against foes with different weapons. The skill set needed isn’t always just fast reaction times there is a lot of strategy involved to win against most enemies. The enemy may have weapons just as powerful as yours but he doesn’t have your intelligence. If you can take advantage of that fact you will be sure to prevail.
